Detailed Instructions

How to play

First, as parents, identify and communicate with your children the behavior(s) that you want them to improve.  This could be "talking back", "whining" ,"not listening", etc.  Determine the duration and family specific details of the win and lose coins.  These can be tailored to meet your family's needs and your parenting style.  For example, "Lose TV" could mean the child loses TV for the day in one family or for a week in another.  This part is up to you.  Once you have the ground rules in place, Fair Change coins are now ready to be used as an accounting system in the behavior modification program.

How the coins work

Last Chance Coins (copper color coins)

There are two last chance coins in a starter pack. Your child will start their day each morning with these two coins. When the child breaks an established behavior rule, they forfeit a last chance coin.  After behavior improvement is seen over time, parents can reduce to either one or zero starting last chance coins, until the improved behavior is a good habit.

Lose Coins (silver color coins)

A lose coin is given to your child when a behavior rule is broken, and your child does not possess any more last chance coins.  The lose coin (chosen by the parent) will display the type of consequence, i.e. "Early Bedtime".  The lose coin consequence will go into effect the next time the activity would occur.  For example, "Early Bedtime" would go into effect that night.

Win Coins (gold colored coins)

A win coin is given to your child when they reach the end of the day with at least one last chance coin in their possession. As stated in the "How to Play" description, the duration/extent of the win coin reward is up to the parent.  Win coins can be kept until your child wants to turn them in for the reward.

Settlers Coin (copper color - different image on each side)

The settlers coin is simply a heads or tails coin used to mitigate trivial arguments between siblings.  This "heads or tails" flip coin makes the decision for you, and the children are obligated to play by its rules as there's no arguing with a fair chance.  This coin remains with the parent and can be used whenever the parent wishes to employ it.
